Why Too Much TV or IPad Time Might Harmful to Children Mental Development
In the modern world, we are surrounded by screens of computers, tablets, smartphones, and ever more magnificent TV sets.
Often they make our life easier, but they also become a common way of spending time. Our children, at an increasingly younger age, are fascinated by virtual reality games. Too much television in a child's life can lead to speech delay, trouble falling asleep, and other disorders of the nervous system.
Television and other media kill children's natural need to experience life. It limits the forms of children's activities such as discovering, searching, because the screen shows everything faster and in a more attractive way. Too much screen time breaks children's imagination as the media will offer ready-made images, scenarios of situations, or behaviours.
Television encourages mental laziness, there is no need to search for information, just turn on the button.
For many people, TV, iPads, or smartphones are the basic sources of entertainment. Often parents are not fully aware of its negative impact on health and serve their children for several hours of fairy tale sessions. The consequences of spending too much time watching TV or tablets can be severe, especially for children who develop neurological disorder.
The negative effects of too much screen time include:
- Lack of the right amount of movement that can lead to problems with balance, excessive kilograms, and spine defects.
- Television can undermine a kid’s self-confidence. Presenting the best, makes kids compare themself and make their own assessment.
- Hyperactivity, problems with memory and concentration related to the excessive amount of stimuli emitted in a short time. The child's brain is not able to keep up with the presented messages: visual, auditory, and sound.
- Television impairs language skills. The child is a passive recipient, there is no dialog or answer.
- Difficulty distinguishing between the world presented on television and the real world.
- Learning problems, which are directly related to problems with memory and concentration.
- Children that spend too much time watching TV or tablets quickly get bored and discouraged.
While using the benefits of modern technologies and media, let’s not forget to keep our children safe. Before you provide your child with a smartphone or tablet, secure the devices. Set time limit and content restriction. Don’t use the TV as a babysitter, young children shouldn’t watch it alone.
The uncontrolled use of media by children might also lead to the disappearance of family ties, mainly with their parents, but also with other family members. The world of iPads, smartphones, computers replace contacts with people.
So let’s switch off the phones and tablets from time to time, enter "days without TV". Try to interest your kid with different, more active forms of spending time together.
Encourage your child to engage in walks, trips, books, etc. Devote much more time to introducing the child to the real world. If parents show and explain the world to their children, they don't want to spend whole days in front of the screen, they don't feel lonely and lost.
